['ləʊȓjən 'riːdʒən], ehemalige Region in Mittelschottland, südlich des Firth of Forth, 1 755 km2, (1995) 764 600 Einwohner; 1996 in die Verwaltungsdistrikte East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian und Edinburgh aufgeteilt. Im zentralschottischen Tiefland werden auf den fruchtbaren Geschiebelehmen Gerste (v. a. für die Whiskyherstellung), Weizen, Saatkartoffeln und Sonderkulturen angebaut, außerdem wird Milchwirtschaft betrieben. Im Süden hat die Lothian Region Anteil am Berg- und Hügelland der Southern Uplands (Pentland Hills, Moorfoot Hills, Lammermuir Hills) mit ausgedehnten Bergheiden; hier gibt es Schafwirtschaft. Die Industriestruktur wird durch Kohlenbergbau (auf wenige produktive Gruben geschrumpft), Schwermaschinen- und Fahrzeugbau, chemische, Papier-, Elektronik- und Nahrungsmittelindustrie bestimmt. Wirtschaftszentrum ist Edinburgh, östlich von Edinburgh befindet sich die New Town Livingston.
